A little history: Valentine’s Day

A Celebration of and Legend

Valentine’s Day, celebrated every February 14th, is known today as the holiday of love, but its origins date back to ancient times. In Ancient Rome, a pagan festival called the Lupercalia was held in February to honor fertility. To Christianize this tradition, the Church is believed to have replaced it with the feast of Saint Valentine, a Roman priest from the 3rd century.

According to legend, Valentine defied Emperor Claudius II, who had banned soldiers from marrying, believing it would make them weaker in battle. Despite this, Valentine secretly performed marriages until he was imprisoned and executed on February 14th, 269 AD. Before his death, he is said to have written a letter to his jailer’s daughter, signing it “Your Valentine”, inspiring the tradition of love notes exchanged on this day.

Over time, Valentine’s Day evolved into the romantic celebration we know today. During the Middle Ages, lovers exchanged poems, and by the 20th century, greeting cards and gifts became popular. Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide, as a universal symbol of love and affection.
